A long walk, including the part before it begins.
This site documents preparation for, and progress on, a planned northbound walk on the Pacific Crest Trail.
It begins before the first step because preparation is not separate from the journey. Decisions about timing, permits, equipment, pace, weather, fire, snow, and water shape what becomes possible later. Writing through those decisions while they are still provisional keeps them honest.
The intention is simple: begin walking in spring and continue north as conditions, access, permits, and judgment allow. The details are not fixed. Fire seasons, reroutes, closures, snowpack, runoff, and ordinary life all get a vote. Plans will change.
What follows is not a guide, a manifesto, or a performance. It is an account of how a long walk is conceived, deferred, rebuilt, adjusted, and carried forward under uncertainty. Some entries are practical. Some are reflective. All are written from the ground up.
